Do you and your team feel everyone is on a treadmill at times, running faster and faster but not catching up? Do little disagreements between the staff lead to larger confrontations? These may be symptoms of a high level of stress that can affect the relationships between the team and with your patients.
Provide a comfortable place to work
A cluttered, cramped office, equipment looks worn out or a dark and dingy environment can make a practice uncomfortable to work in. Something as simple as a fresh coat of paint can brighten things up and give you a positive lift.
Provide a spot to "get away"
Having a spot in the office where staff can take a break and relax from the ringing phones and whirling drills can reduce stress. No need for a spacious lounge with plasma TV's and overstuffed couches, but a comfortable place to "get away" to recharge your batteries.
Allow the staff to make decisions
The feeling of being in control of your day is empowering for most people. Allowing staff to have a say on issues that affect them directly will give them a sense of personal power. People who feel in control often experience less stress.
Be generous with sincere thank you's
A quick, genuine thank you for the staff will go a long way to reducing complaints and stress. Recognition for going above and beyond is always appreciated and remembered the next time things get crazy.
Provide an ergonomically correct workplace
The chair that is always uncomfortable, the operatory light that has seen better days or a computer screen that is poorly lit can impact many things. Tools and equipment that are not correct can cause physical stress that can lead to work place injuries or reduced productivity.
Nothing will totally eliminate all of the challenges a dental or medical team faces daily. A few small changes can make the days go by more smoothly and seem less hectic.
